The Strangers
the doctor is escorted through the huge palatial mansion , through the yard with arches and columns decorated in traditional rajput style, to the private chambers of the rani, the door was painted red and green with a peacock and lion carved on it, the delicate jade bead ropes hung instead of curtains , the strict silent maid stepped aside gesturing him to enter the room of the rani who lay on a silver four poster , her green eyes had a glint of extra ordinary intensity, both strangers for a moment assessed each other, then the rani exclaimed feverishly she was dying and where had he been missing for four days when he was called, it was an urgent appeal, the doctor started to examine the patient who stubbornly refused to get herself checked , she wanted to talk , to share something only with him as a stranger , she had two hours , the doctor looked around , he saw the bedroom door opened into a well furnished drawing room , there framed on the wall was a portrait of a jodhpuri prince in breeches holding a rifle, the rani said he was kanwar raj bahadur singh
