the  IG  was  getting  phone  calls  directly  on his  office  phone, he   diverts  them out  to his  personal  secretary,  he  could  not   say  more  than sorry  to  the  last  friend   who  had  some  questions  he  could  not  answer, he  begins  to  turn the  pages  of  a  book
