... the mood in the courts of california was extremely hostile, the lawyer was absolutely certain his client will lose the case, he duscussed the matter with hus senior  in the firm   if it would be  a good idea to gift a most expenssive cigar box to the judge who liked cigars , the senior lawyer structly prohibited him to  do it because  the judge had a reputation if being very honest and wuse, the bribe could even  harm their own  case 

On the next hearing the lawyer  won the case , the senior lawyer  reminded him  the cigar box would have  gone against them

The lawyer laughed heartily, he actually had sent the cigar box to the judge but from the   rival lawyer
